On our first (and only) morning in Rockport, MA, Other Sam took me to one of her favorite Rockport-ian haunts: the local swimming area, AKA the quarry. Apparently, stone from the quarry, specifically granite, was used to build many buildings in Boston and shipped down the coast! Awesome, right? As you can tell from these photos, the sight was breathtaking: high cliffs, weathered and gorgeous granite, water even bluer than the sky, and more flora and fauna than I could imagine. I loved it. We woke up early to go for a walk to the quarry and a swim in the water. Needless to say, it was very chilly…but we braved the cold and went swimming. Sam even jumped off one of the cliffs! She’s quite the daredevil, you see.
I wasn’t kidding: I’m in love with Rockport.
Rockport, MA has many amazing aspects that made me never want to leave. One of them is the stunning, lush greenness of the whole town. There are trees and rocks everywhere (it is named after its abundance of granite, after all). And the flowers…don’t get me started on the flowers! Other Sam’s stepmother has an amazing garden, and as you can see, I went crazy with the floral photos. Can you blame me?
Yes, please, carry me away. Luckily, today was my last final…and my last day of junior year! Hallelujah! This year rocked for many reasons (um, I went to PARIS, won awards, made awesome new friends, had lots of fun “parties”, had the most incredible social life of my entire life) but it was also a bit of a drag (depression came back, difficult courses in school, lots of tears, lots of challenges.) However, I can proudly say that I now, officially, a senior in high school. WOW. Lots of amazing changes are on the horizon!

For some reason, this lovely chambray shirt always makes me think “artist”. No, not artist: “l’artiste”, en francais. I love wearing it open, with the sleeved cuffed, as it feels very down-to-earth and comfortable. Love it.

Spending a weekend in a beautiful beach-side town like Rockport truly reinforced one of my passionate (albeit very frivolous) goals for summer 2013: to find the perfect summer fragrance. Other Sam and I discussed this phenomenon while trying to fall asleep in her stepmom’s cottage in Rockport. She mentioned out of the blue that she wanted to smell like cinnamon and spice, and I told her what I’d read in a magazine a few weeks earlier: that was a great goal, as the spiciest, most complex fragrances are the ones that last the best on the skin. Her mention of fragrance made me think of what I wanted to smell like, and naturally, I told Sam exactly what came to my mind: “I want to smell like summer in a bottle.” Needless to say, I’m still searching for such a scent.
To me, summer embodies all of the best parts of being alive. Freedom, change, wildness, fun, sexiness, effortlessness, relaxation…for me, the perfect summer day combines all of these vibes. I love wearing less clothes, walking around town in a bathing suit and minidress; I love sporting my straw hats and outrageous sunglasses, swapping my bold lipstick and heavy foundation for sunscreen and tinted lip balm. Summer is everything I love, with a little sunshine and warmth added in. It’s perfect. It’s heavenly. I’ll always be a summer girl, and it makes sense that I’ve tried for years to find the perfect scent that exudes all of my aforementioned “summer” qualities.
Ideally, my summer fragrance hunt will culminate with a beautiful, summer-in-a-bottle fragrance atop my dresser. I’m hunting specifically for a perfume, not an eau de toilette or body spray. I have many of those. I want something that will last on the skin for more than an hour or two. I’d like something that is more sophisticated, too. Most of my perfumes are very fruity and seem very juvenile to me. Though I’ll always love my first perfume, DKNY Be Delicious, its apple-heavy fragrance isn’t quite my jam anymore. I’d love for my signature summer scent to have more floral notes or herbal notes, maybe some lavender or jasmine. Just something a little more mature and…well, sexier. However, I want to be able to wear this fragrance during the daytime. I don’t want it to be too heavy. I’d still like it to have some lightness and ease to it.
I’ve compiled a little photo collage of some possible contenders for my summer scent of 2013. I haven’t smelled most of these, and the ones that I have smelled were tested too long ago for me to really remember them. If you have anymore recommendations for a lovely summer scent, feel free to comment!

You may have noticed that my blog was unusually quiet this weekend. I have an excellent excuse: my close friend Sam H. (I’ll call her Other Sam for now, even though I was technically the other Sam while we were out of town) took me to meet her family in the beautiful towns of Rockport and Newton, MA. Talk about incredible, lush beauty and gorgeous buildings! I loved Rockport for its gorgeous beaches and adorable little town (you’ll see more photos later…this photo diary has many parts.) We stayed at her family’s little house right outside of town. I adored it. I repeated many times that I didn’t want to leave Rockport…what a stunning place. Even the little cottage outside her family’s house was so adorable and precious!
